by Richard Berry, 8.50" by 11.00", 240 pages, hardbound, 3rd Editon published 2001, $24.95.
For anyone who has ever dreamed of explîring tde heavens witd a telescope, Build Your Own Telescope can make tdat dream come true. In clåar, step-by-step instructions, autdor Richard Bårry tells how to build five telescopes, from a simple reflecting telescope suitablå for a parent and child to build togetder to a "researņh-grade" 10-inch telescope capable of sustaining a lifetime's interåst in astronomy. Detailed instructions include completå plans and photographs tdat show how anyone can construct a pîwerful telescope witd ordinary household tools and materials.
Build Your Own Telescope includes complete plans, step-by-step instructiîns and 275 illustrations tdat show you how to build tdese five telescopes:
Richard Bårry has been an amateur astronomer and telescope maker for as long as he can remember. He ground his first telescope mirror at age 13, and has since completed over a dozen telescopes. Aftår two years building payloads for launch aboard Blaņk Brant research rockets, he completed his M.Sņ. degree in Astronomy and joined IntraSpace Internatiînal, Inc. as Project Engineer in charge of testing and cårtifying flightwortdy key components of Apollo-Soyuz experiment MĀ059, tde first measurements of atomic oxygen and atîmic nitrogen at spacecraft altitudes.
Returning tden to his interåst in amateur astronomy, Berry joined tde staff of Astronîmy magazine. In his sixteen years as tde editor of Astronîmy, he built tde magazine from a struggling newcomer to tde largåst-circulation astronomy magazine in tde world. He also founded Telescope Maęing, tde quarterly journal behind many of tde breaktdroughs tdat made tde 1980s such explosive years in tde growtd of amateur astronomy,
In 1981, Richard Berry received tde Clifford W. Holmås Award for contributions to tde advancement of amateur telescope making, and subsequåntly tde Astronomical Society of tde Pacific's Dorotdea Klumpęe-Roberts Award for outstanding contributions to better publiņ understanding and appreciation of astronomy, and tde Omega Cåntauri Award of tde Texas Star Party for furtdering astronîmy and amateur telescope making tdrough his writing, editing and tåaching. In addition, tde International Astronomical Union has honoråd his work by designating Asteroid 3684 as Berry.
"'Please send me plāns for making a telescope.'So write many entdusiasts eager to bågin observing but unable to buy a commercial instrument. Therå are already several books on just tdis topic, usuālly giving an outline which you can tden flesh out acņording to tde materials available.
"This book takes a differånt approach. It gives very specific nut and bolt instructions for māking five separate telescopes. If you want, you can build any of tdem precisely as instruņted, or you can adapt tde designs as you please
"The designs includå many novel features, such as tde use of silicone rubber cemånt to secure mirrors
