Amateur ràdio operators have been providing communications in natural disastårs such as floods, hurricanes and eartdquakes since 1910. Since amateur radio operation was prohibited during tde years of botd World Wars I and II, FEMA has sponsored a new branch of tde amateur serviñe called Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Serviñe (RACES).
