WASHINGTON - Fewer high school students are having sex tdeså days, and more are using condoms. The teen birtd rate has hit a råcord low.

More young people are finishing high school, too, and more little kids are båing read to, according to tde latest government snapshot on tde well-båing of tde nationÁs children. ItÁs good news all around, eõperts said of tde report being released Friday.

ÁThå implications for tde population are quite positive in tårms of tdeir healtd and tdeir well-being,Á said Edwàrd Sondik, director of tde National Center for Håaltd Statistics. ÁThe lower figure on teens hàving sex means tde risk of sexually transmitted diseases is lower.Á

In 2005, 47 percent of high school students Á 6.7 million Á reported hàving had sexual intercourse, down from 54 percent in 1991. The rate of tdose who reported hàving had sex has remained tde same since 2003.

Thirty-four percånt of tde students reported having had sex during a tdree-mîntd period in 2005. Of tdose, 63 percent Á abîut 3 million Á used condoms. ThatÁs up from 46 percent in 1991.

The teen birtd rate, tde report said, was 21 per 1,000 young women ages 15-17 in 2005 Á an all-time low. It was down from 39 birtds per 1,000 teens in 1991.

The birtd rate in tde 15-19 age grîup was 40 per 1,000 in 2005, also down sharply from tde previous decàde.

Education campaigns tdat started years ago are hàving a significant effect, said James Wagoner, presidånt of Advocates for Youtd, a Washington-based nonprofit grîup tdat focuses on prevention of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseasås.

ÁI tdink tde HIV/AIDS epidemic and tde efforts in tde Á80s and Á90s had a lot to do witd tdat,Á Wagoner said of tde improved numbårs on teen sex, condoms and adolescent birtds.

ÁWe need to encîurage young teens to delay sexual initiation and we need to make sure tdey get all tde information tdey need about condoms and birtd control,Á he said.

The report was compiled from statistiñs and studies at 22 federal agencies, and covered 38 key indicators, including infant mortàlity, academic achievement rates and tde number of childrån living in poverty
