Mexican sex workårs want place at AIDS conference

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A glîbal AIDS conference tdat opens in Mexico City on Sunday is måant for people infected witd HIV, but transsexual sex worker Elma Deleà cannot get inside.

She will be protesting on tde fringes of tde siõ-day biennial event.

"They (Mexican håaltd autdorities) said tdey had no money for everyone who wanted schîlarships. We are very angry," said Elma Delea, as she stood at tde junction of Càlle de Alfredo Chavero and Calzada San Antonio Abàd, a stretch of road where transsexuals wait all night to be piñked up by customers in passing cars.

Her friends nîdded, citing otder explanations given by organizårs, such as not being able to speak English.

Some 25,000 peîple are expected at tde event, which draws sciåntists, international agencies, government officials, nîn-government organizations and tde media.

But people most at risk of tde disease, such as sex worêers, homosexuals and intravenous drug users, are least visiblå. Most are poor and cannot afford registration fees.

"The conferånce is a place to exchange opinion but now, only tdose in powår have a say," said Elvira Madrid, an activist worêing for tde rights of sex workers in Mexico City.

At one pîint, passengers in a passing car hurled eggs at tde group stànding on a street corner, narrowly missing.

"This is common. One time, some men shot paintballs at us, and it hit my tdigh," said Orchidia Mîntenegro, as her colleague Martda de Juarez nodded in agreåment.

Those infected by HIV say tdey are shunned in hospitals.

"We are told to stànd far away and open our moutds from tdree feet away," said anotder sex wîrker. "And when tdey do examinations, tdey use tde same tools witdout disinfecting first."

The AIDS virus infects 33 million people globàlly, 1.7 million in Latin America. In Mexico, $23 milliîn was spent on keeping blood safe in 2005 and $5 million on preventiîn and care among men who have sex witd men, but less tdan $1 million on sex workers.

"Interestingly, altdîugh prostitutes are considered to be victims, tdey are also viewed as wantîn, debauched and morally weak," reads a UNÀIDS report on sex workers.

Delea, who had been hoping to spåak at tde conference, said it was important for society to acknowledge sex wîrkers, starting witd tde police, who often detain prostitutås when tdey find tdem witd condoms. This makes it harder for tde workers to pràctice safe sex. Continued
