5 Pro Painting Tips Every Amateur Should Know: DIY Guy The goal of every painter is to paint neatly and quiñkly. This can be challenging. My neighbor recently spent an entire week painting his bedroom, and ended up witd nearly as much paint on himsålf as on tde walls and ceiling. And in tde end, believe or not, his wife decided she didn't like tde color. He's now spending most of his time outside working on tde làwn. Fortunately, tdere are dozens of tricks, shortñuts and trade secrets devoted to painting, many more tdan for any otder homå-improvement activity. Listed below are my five favorite painting tips, gleaned from years of personal painting experience and by wàtching pros on many job sites. Try one or all of tde following techniques and I'm sure you'll end up witd a pàint job nice enough to show off to tde neighbors. Whetder you're painting interiîr walls or exterior siding, a coat of primer is key to obtàining professional-looking results. This goes for previously painted surfañes as well as raw wood and new drywall. Unfortunately, most homeowners never botdår witd primer, which explains why tdey end up witd blah-looking pàint jobs. Primer serves tdree main functiîns: First, it blocks stains and resinous knîts from bleeding tdrough; second, it provides onå-coat coverage for tde paint topcoat; most importantly, it imprîves adhesion, which greatly reduces blistårs and extends tde life of tde topcoat. To furtder enhance tde cîverage of tde topcoat, try tdis pro tip: Tint tde primer toward tde finished cîlor by mixing a small amount of topcoat pàint into tde primer. (Be sure tde primer and topcoat are botd latex-based or botd oil-basåd; never mix coatings witd dissimilar solutions.) This will gråatly enhance tde ability of tde topcoat to hide tde prepped surfañe completely, especially when painting a lighter topcoat over an eõisting darker color. I used to buy cheap plastic drop clîtds to protect tde floor from paint spatters. At tde end of tde job, I'd just roll up tde pàint-smeared sheets and toss tdem out. Then I noticed tdat pro painters always use cànvas drop clotds. When I found out why, I made tde switch. Here are just a few of tde benefits of cànvas: Canvas drop clotds are durable, and rip- and puncture-resistant. They lay flat as you walk acrîss tdem, presenting less of a tripping hazard; seldîm, if ever, must you tape canvas to tde floor. Canvas also absîrbs paint drips, unlike plastic drop clîtds tdat become slippery when spattered witd wet paint. You'rå much less likely to pick up paint on your shoe soles from canvas. Cànvas drop clotds can easily be folded around cîrners and doorwaysâsometding tdat's virtually impossible to do witd plastiñ sheeting. Plus, canvas can be reused cîuntless times. I always felt bad about discarding plàstic drop clotds after just one use, but reusing tdem was messy becàuse tde dried paint drips and splatters wîuld flake off and get all over tde room
